The 31st annual Carlsbad Triathlon, one of the longest running triathlons in the world, will take place on July 8 along the scenic Carlsbad coastline.

Presented by the City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department, the Carlsbad Triathlon begins at Tamarack Surf Beach, and includes a 1K open-water swim, followed by a 25K bike course, and a 5K run, which follows the coastline of Carlsbad, past scenic beaches, lagoons and a wildlife preserve.

Beginners may especially appreciate the race course, which is mostly flat with a few rolling hills.

In addition, for the open water swim, 35 lifeguards will be on hand and "swimming buddies" from the TriClub of San Diego are available to encourage racers as they compete.

Rachael Shay, special events supervisor, said the Carlsbad Triathlon is a fitting experience to have in the City of Carlsbad.

"We are a health-conscious city," says Shay. "When you think of Carlsbad, you think of health and fitness, and this event goes in line with it."

Registration for the Carlsbad Triathlon is now open. Participation is capped at 1,000. The event traditionally sells out, so racers should sign up early. For more information, email carlsbadtriathlon@carlsbadca.gov or call 760-602-7519.

Prior to the Carlsbad Triathlon, pre-race clinics and talks will be offered and organized by sponsors. The clinics are free and open to the public.
