Take a survey about city land use

The City of Carlsbad has launched an online survey to get input about how vacant and underutilized sites around the city might be designated for different land uses. The survey is part of the city’s update of its General Plan, a blueprint for how the city will use land to achieve the community’s vision for the future.  Watch a video about the General Plan update.

The survey will be available until Feb. 17.

With input from the Envision Carlsbad Citizen’s Committee and Planning Commission, city staff developed three land use concepts based on the core values of the Carlsbad Community Vision.  The community’s vision is made up of nine core values identified by the community during the first phase of Envision Carlsbad.

The concepts represent alternative strategies for accommodating projected population and employment growth, while reflecting the core values identified in the Community Vision.  Each of the three concepts share certain characteristics: creating destinations; ensuring bike, pedestrian, and vehicular connectivity; maintaining and enhancing open space; and preserving existing neighborhoods. However, each concept emphasizes the community's core values in different ways.

“The purpose of the survey is to get public feedback on which strategy or combination of strategies community members prefer,” said David de Cordova, one of the project managers for the city’s General Plan update.  “The results of this survey will be shared with the citizens committee, Planning Commission and City Council to assist them in making informed choices when determining the location of future development in the city.”

According to de Cordova, it is likely that no single concept will find universal acceptance; rather, the best ideas from several concepts might ultimately be combined to become a unified preferred plan.

“Most of the major growth in Carlsbad is behind us now, so our goals for this General Plan update are more focused on sustaining our excellent quality of life, rather than big new developments,” said de Cordova.

The city will also hold two workshops to get input on these concepts.

“We want to make sure that all residents have a chance to participate in a way that is convenient to them,” said de Cordova.
