New trash carts delivered in June

Carlsbad residents will receive their new, free trash carts during the month of June in preparation for new automated trash service. Waste Management, the city’s trash contractor, will deliver the carts June 4-29 on residents’ regularly scheduled trash collection day.
Under the new automated trash collection system, residents will use wheeled carts with attached lids instead of trash cans and recycling crates. Specially designed trucks will pick up the new carts automatically with a hydraulic arm instead of Waste Management employees manually picking them up.
Getting rid of old trash cans and crates
Once residents receive their new carts, they should start using them immediately. Waste Management will go through each neighborhood and collect unwanted trash cans and recycling crates the two weeks following delivery of the new carts. Residents will be given yellow “take me” stickers when they receive their new carts. For collection of unwanted trash cans, residents can place the stickers onto their old, unwanted cans and place them at the curb on pick up day. These special stickers will not be needed to collect unwanted recycle crates. Those can be placed at the curb the week following the delivery of the new automated carts. Residents can also drop off their unwanted cans and crates at Waste Management, 5960 El Camino Real, from June 11 through July 13.
When new service starts
Once the new carts are delivered, Waste Management will no longer service trash or recycling from customer-owned trash cans, plastic bags, loose materials or crates. Although new trash rates will be effective July 1, the transition to the new service will take place throughout the month of June, as each neighborhood receives the new carts.
Under the new system, Waste Management asks residents to do the following:
- Separate trash, recycling and green waste and place into the appropriate cart. All material must fit into the cart with the lid closed.
- Roll carts out to the curb line by 6 a.m. and place with the handle facing away from the street.
- Place carts a minimum of two feet from cars, mail boxes and other objects and one foot from other carts. Also make sure carts are out from under trees or any overhead items.
If residents want to change the number or size of their carts, they will be allowed to exchange each type of cart once during the first 90 days following the initial delivery date. After 90 days, one additional exchange can be made at no charge. Any exchanges after that will result in a $10 delivery charge.

). Exchanges of the carts will begin July 9, after all carts have been delivered citywide. Do not place “take me” stickers on new carts.
Residents who did not specify the number and size of carts they wanted will automatically receive one 96-gallon cart for trash, one for recycling and one for green waste. Residents who live in homeowner’s associations or complexes that did not specify the number and size of carts they wanted will automatically receive one 64-gallon trash and one 64-gallon recycling cart each. These can be exchanged if needed.
