April 24, 2012
The Carlsbad City Council awarded a contract Tuesday to San Diego-based T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc., to build
Alga Norte Community Park, the City of Carlsbad’s newest park, which will include pools, ball fields, a
skate park, a dog park, a new playground and other amenities that support a healthy outdoor lifestyle for Carlsbad residents.
The new park will be located on a 32-acre site at the corner of Poinsettia Lane and Alicante Road, just east of El Camino Real. Grading for the site was completed in 2008. Construction of the pools and other park amenities is scheduled to begin in June and be completed in late 2013.
T.B. Penick & Sons performs work throughout the United States and abroad. Notable projects in San Diego include work at SeaWorld, Balboa Park and the San Diego Convention Center. In Carlsbad, the company built the seawall along Carlsbad Boulevard south of Tamarack and made major improvements to Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park. The company has completed six pool complexes, including for Naval Facilities Engineering Command, the City of San Diego, City of Temecula and Eagles Crest Development in Escondido. The company is currently working on the Perris Valley Aquatics Center, a major swim complex and water park in Riverside County.
In addition to a $26 million contract with T.B. Penick & Sons, the city awarded a $743,600 contract for construction management to Kitchell and a $265,000 contract to Wimmer, Yamada and Caughey for design compliance.

- A 10 by 25 foot therapeutic pool with jets
- A 22-foot diameter 6 inch deep kids pool
